Sound barrier

Get out your clapsticks and shakers and create your own Australia-inspired music in class.

One of the fantastic things about Indigenous Australian music is its simplicity, making it an ideal starting point for your own classroom compositions. For some early inspiration listen to the music on the ‘Australia’ multimedia PDF. You will see how the sound is layered, which is where the richness of the music stems from. Talk to the children about how they think the different sounds were made. What sounds can they pick out? The tune features didgeridoo drone, jaw harp rhythm, plus ethnic drums, shakers and clapsticks.
