In some cultures foxes are often depicted as symbols of deceit and cunning. Why do the children think that foxes are thought of in this way? How does our language reinforce this image? For example, we say ‘as sly as a fox’; ‘to fox’ means to trick or deceive, or to act deceitfully; and ‘to outfox’ means to be wittier or more cunning than someone.
Look at the pictures of the foxes and discuss how they are portrayed. Introduce the concept of anthropomorphism and look for human elements in each of the characters. Only one of the featured fox characters – The Midnight Fox – is not anthropomorphised in some way. Discuss whether it’s fair or appropriate to anthropomorphise animals.
