These edited extracts are a challenging read and make for pretty grim reading but they could be tackled by older children with adult support.
Ask the children to think about what Scott might have thought the expedition would be like and how the reality compared to this. Were the men brave? Do they think the outcome would have been different if the weather had been on their side or if the Norwegians hadn’t got to the Pole first?
