There was plenty of scope for marvelling at the athletic achievements in the velodrome at London 2012. Gold medals were certainly the reward for the hard work of the athletes, but something else was at work too… design and technology.
The most striking thing when looking back at old sporting images is how sports equipment and clothing have changed over the years. Very often these changes have little to do with the fashion of the day – although fashion does play its part. Changes, especially to sports equipment, are often much more to do with sporting advantage; and there are strict rules about what can and can’t be enhanced.
