Plucky ducks

In 1992, a consignment of plastic ducks accidentally fell from a container ship in the middle of the North Pacific Ocean, midway between Washington State in North America and the northern tip of Japan (44.7ºN, 178.1ºE). These tiny ducks turned out to be very useful to oceanographers as they told them more about our oceans’ currents than they had ever learned before. However, they also highlighted a growing problem: that our seas are rapidly turning into plastic soup.
