Mood music

Knowledge and skills

  • Composing music
  • Experimenting with sound
  • Performing music
  • Listening to music
  • Peer evaluation

Francesca Smith, music teacher at Cawston Grange Primary School, shows how story can inspire some cool musical creations.

Starting a music lesson with a story rather than a song gives pupils the opportunity to experience music making differently – without feeling the constraints of comparing their compositions to other music they have heard. The absence of music should help them compose freely and explore their own ideas.
